By Peter Bright | Last updated October 30, 2008 8:15 AM

Though many previously bundled applets now will ship separately to Windows 7, Windows Media Player remains part of the core OS. Windows 7 will ship with Windows Media Player 12, which includes some surprising new features.

WInamp media player

Winamp media player

Product summary

The good: Basic, efficient, and fun to use; plug-in architecture lends itself to enhancements and customizations; nag-free access to online media, including AOL's audio and video services and 20 XM Satellite Radio channels; loyal and creative community support.

The bad: Detached, multipanel interface isn't for everyone; no direct access to online music stores besides AOL Music Now; limited to 2X ripping and burning in the free version; free version lacks MP3, AAC, and WMA encoding.

The bottom line: Winamp is still a fun player for customizing your playback experience, but most users will prefer the all-in-one experience of Windows Media Player or iTunes.

Winamp might best be described as the time-warp music jukebox. The app continues to focus on the fun of organizing and playing media while the industry has progressed to all-encompassing multimedia suites that integrate with online music stores and provide ever more intuitive interfaces. While Winamp encourages customization and experimentation with downloadable skins and plug-ins, the other players have moved on. From Microsoft Windows Media Player (WMP) 11 and Musicmatch Jukebox 10 (now the Yahoo Music Engine) to newcomers such as the Virgin Digital player, users are looking for all-in-one interfaces with a single large window, tabbed access to functions, and in-your-face displays of partners' online media and stores.

KM PLAYER

KM PLAYER

Despite lacking a Help file, KMPlayer is one of the most powerful freeware video players we've seen. It includes a vast array of video- and audio-capturing options, as well as skins, a plethora of playback controls and tweaks, and broad DVD support.

You'll have to learn the ropes yourself, perhaps a hindrance to newcomers. But if you're familiar with where things ought to be in programs, and willing to patiently wait for mouse-over labels to pop up and then click on them for the actual menus, KMPlayer has the potential to be immensely rewarding. It supports all major file formats, and all of the minor and obscure ones we tested. It did have problems with the RealPlayer 11's video capture IVR format, but not much else.

Advanced options include frame capture and a frame-forward feature, which is actually a fractional Play button, but the difference is negligible. The Pause button is a fast responder, too. Combined with streaming TV and HDTV compatibility, playlists, and the ability to select which codec is used on a video-by-video basis, and you get a media player that demands attention.

Gom player

Gom player

Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated by movies and movie theaters. As most of us know, motion pictures were pioneered by Thomas Edison and the Lumire brothers back in 1890's. I was very surprised to find out that, at the beginning, the cinematographer was both the director of the movie and the camera operator. In 1919, in Hollywood, the time lasting motion picture capital of the world, the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) was founded. But let's put all that aside and get back to our topic, which is video players. I can't remember my first video player (of course, it most surely was a VCR), but I remember a player for video files I used for a long time on my computer: Vplayer, one of the earliest versions and a good one too. Time passed by and I switched to Bsplayer. Now I am using various video players, but the one I am going to analyze in this review goes by the name of Gom Player. If it hadn't been for my boss, I may have discovered it later.

It is an easy-to-use application for playing video files on your computer. The interface is very simple and tasty-looking. All the buttons and menus of the software are very well placed (click on the logo in the left upper side for the menu to unfold).

Although it looks a little simple, give it a shot, you don't have to judge a book by its cover. It has all you need from a basic video player and more; for those who are advanced there are some options too. It practically has a little something for everybody.

For the beginning, let's proceed with saying that Gom Player supports most of the codecs (AVI, DAT, MPEG, DivX, and many more) due to its own embedded system. So you won't have to look for codecs every time you cannot play a video format or choose from the codecs folder (which I'm sure is pretty large); this way you give up incompatibility issues.

You can choose your codecs from the Preference menu at Others, Codec. In the same menu you have the option of choosing what video formats you want Gom Player to open; the list should be more than enough both for newbies and more skilled users. It should be fair-enough to say that among the list there can be found formats like .ogm, .skm, .lmp4, .k3g, .vob, .dat, etc.

In the Subtitles Preference Menu you can make the necessary adjustments for your subtitles. Don't be shy and go crazy by changing the font, the size, or the display method that allows displaying on video (TV-OUT) or on overlay surface. Applying effects on the subtitles is no sweat, you can choose between color, outline and shadow. Position your subtitles wherever you want and set your own character spacing. As you can see, you have quite a text editor in here.

The skilled users can play in Video option in Preferences with the video settings: change the output type according to your hardware configuration. At overlay color key the user can define his/her own colors or use those already defined.
Video effect settings permit setting deblock and video effects like smoothening, sharpening and adding noise to the video. We're still in the Video tab of the Preference menu, and at Screen Size, believe it or not (I've seen it before and it kind of became a standard in the latest video players), you can change Gom Player's screen size (a new option is changing only if it doesn't correspond to a user-defined resolution).

The Audio section gathers settings for the sound devices and you have the options of an equalizer and normalizer. Set your AC3 settings (channels) and Gain Control (DRC and expand audio channel) in AC3 tab. A Sound Effect tab is available for those who wish to set voice filters, reverb and extra-stereo.

I won't get too deep into the General tab because it stores pretty common settings, which can be found in almost any other video player. But a pretty little thing in Logo deserves your attention as you can change the logo on the display of Gom Player with any other logo from your computer.

Needless to say that the player also supports DVD movies, as I have mentioned in the supported file formats paragraph.

The Good

It is free software and a damn good one. I was impressed by the easy to use interface that does not disturb, not even in the least way possible. The menu is very easy to use and it is not filled with the kind of terms that take you forever to read and understand. The authors kept it as simple as possible and also introduced some features for more advanced users.

The Bad

It's a bad thing that software like this one does not appear on the market every 3 months at least. The logo link to the web did not work for me (maybe you'll be luckier).

The Truth

Some of the players that cost (and some of them cost pretty much) should take a look at the free products and start building from that point on.
I strongly and "severely" recommend Gom Player, especially for those who are at the beginning of their movie-watching 'career'. It deserves a big hand of applause.

Here are some snapshots of the application in action:

First impressions

Chrome is smooth, well refined (as of limited usage I have done) and manages the migration process flawlessly by importing every bit of important data from IE or Firefox. The innovative placement of tab bar, lack of title bar (that’s right, no title bar for Chrome), omnibar (that is what Google calls Chrome’s search-cum-address bar) are all a fresh breath of life in an otherwise plain browser. Did I tell you Chrome follows Firefox shortcuts (mostly)?

Such mistakes are common in most phishing emails. Also note that although the URL of the bank's webpage appears to be legitimate, it actually links to the phisher's webpage.

uTorrent has become one of the most appreciated BitTorrent client out there. This is partly due to its simplicity, efficiency and user oriented design and to the fact that its executable adds a directory and some option data to your computer, having at the same time very small file size and low memory requirements (less than 6MB).

There's no question about it: 64-bit computing is the future, because it promises better performance and room to grow for memory-hungry applications and operating systems. In fact, millions of people already use desktops and laptops with 64-bit processors that have been available from AMD since 2003 and Intel since February 2005. With the release of Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition, Microsoft takes a big first step toward a 64-bit world. But Rome wasn't built in a day, and Microsoft's transition to 64-bit will be a gradual one. Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is not available in boxed editions via resellers; it will be sold only through OEM vendors and licensing agreements. The new OS is priced the same as the 32-bit Windows XP Professional, and for a limited time, current XP Professional customers running 64-bit systems can upgrade for free. Microsoft can afford to take a measured approach to 64-bit computing because few software applications are available in 64-bit editions and many hardware devices don't yet have compatible drivers. In fact, many of the native applications in Microsoft's new OS, such as Outlook Express and Windows Media Player, still run in 32-bit mode.
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is a big deal for software developers because it gives them a solid Windows platform to write apps that can harness the potential of 64-bit. The release also represents a major milestone toward Microsoft's next-generation Longhorn operating system. Windows XP Professional x64 Edition promises substantial speed improvements with CAD/CAM, 3D modeling, and other high-end tools that will justify the move to the new OS. For the average user, though, 64-bit Windows is, for now, little more than a curiosity. Compatibility issues far outweigh any potential speed boosts, making it an inadvisable upgrade for all but the most die-hard hobbyists.
If you already have one of the millions of 64-bit-capable laptops running 32-bit Windows and want to switch, be prepared for headaches. Windows x64 doesn't offer a 32-bit Windows upgrade option; you'll need to do a fresh install. That means booting your system from the installation CD and navigating through some confusing text prompts to install the system. If you're planning to upgrade from a 32-bit Windows computer, you'll have to copy your settings (we recommend storing an external hard drive) and reinstall all of your utilities and applications later. Though most of your applications will work fine within Windows x64's 32-bit compatibility mode, if the software includes its own device driver, you may encounter difficulties. For instance, when we tried to install iTunes, we were greeted with an error message saying that one of the drivers included with the software wasn't compatible with Windows x64. Though the application launched and appeared to work, there's likely a compatibility issue lurking below.

After installing iTunes, we encountered an error, since one of the included device drivers wasn't 64-bit compatible. However, iTunes appeared to function correctly despite this error.

In addition, each piece of hardware in your system needs a 64-bit driver to work properly. Though Microsoft includes many common device drivers with Windows x64, older or less common pieces of hardware won't work without a driver supplied by the manufacturer. Vendors such as Brother, Canon, Epson, Lexmark, Ricoh, Samsung, Wacom, Xerox, and Zoran currently offer driver support for the new OS, with other vendors expected to do so by the end of this year.

By far the easiest way to get 64-bit Windows is to purchase a new system with the software preinstalled. That way, you're assured that all of the PC's hardware will have 64-bit drivers available. Acer, AlienWare, Dell, FSC, Fujitsu, HP, Hitachi, IBM, NEC, and Unisys are expected to ship servers and workstations with either the server or workstation version of Windows x64 preinstalled. If you choose to upgrade a 64-bit system running 32-bit Windows XP, however, we strongly recommend creating a dual-boot system and installing Windows XP Professional x64 Edition onto a separate partition to test whether your hardware and software are compatible.

Microsoft designed its new OS to be backward compatible with 32-bit applications, and that's good since much of the software bundled within Windows x64, such as Outlook Express and Windows Media Player, remain 32-bit. The big exception, however, is Internet Explorer (IE)--Windows XP Professional x64 Edition includes both a 32-bit and a 64-bit version of the Web browser. However, since few if any browser plug-ins or toolbars are currently 64-bit, you'll probably want to use the 32-bit version for your daily Web surfing. At this time, there is no compelling reason to use 64-bit IE. Even Microsoft's own Windows Update is 32-bit only. When we tried using the Windows Update button on the Control Panel, Windows initially launched a 64-bit browser, then redirected us to run Update in a 32-bit browser instead.

When we tried to run Windows Update from the Control Panel, Windows launched a 64-bit browser, then relaunched the 32-bit browser, since Microsoft's Update plug-in currently supports only 32-bit.

Visually, x64 Windows differs little from 32-bit Windows XP Pro; the big changes are internal. Microsoft reworked the Windows XP Professional interface to run in 64-bit mode. In addition, x64 Windows is actually based on the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 code base, which Microsoft touts as having better reliability and stability than its desktop versions of Windows XP. Because the new OS runs on 64-bit systems, you can now take advantage of a feature first introduced in Windows XP SP2, the so-called data execution prevention (DEP) feature, sometimes referred to as no execute (NX), which combats viruses and worms attempting to take advantage of buffer overruns in your system's memory. And because there are very few 64-bit applications, your current 32-bit applications run in a separate protected memory space to ensure compatibility and reliability.

In the Windows Task Manager, 32-bit applications are marked with an *32 designation.

The main advantage of a 64-bit operating system comes in its ability to handle huge amounts of memory. Thirty-two-bit Windows is limited to 4GB of physical RAM, with only 2GB available to an application, though there is a workaround that lets some applications access up to 3GB. Sixty-four-bit Windows blows away this limitation, supporting up to 128GB of physical RAM and 16 terabytes of virtual memory.

Of course, most systems don't have close to 2GB of RAM, and even if yours did, the extra memory wouldn't come in handy when balancing your checkbook or downloading MP3s. Microsoft designed Windows XP Professional x64 Edition for workstation applications such as CAD/CAM, 3D modeling, and scientific simulations, where extra memory support promises a big boost in performance. For example, instead of storing data on the hard drive, active applications will be able to store everything in much-faster RAM instead.

Even without massive amounts of memory, applications currently optimized for the 64-bit architecture may also see a speed boost as they take advantage of the processor's full capabilities. This could extend the performance boost to areas such as 3D gaming and video, sound, and photo editing. However, it will take a while until most popular applications are optimized for 64-bit. Vendors such as Avid, Softimage, BEA Systems, BMC, Cakewalk, Citrix Systems, CommVault, Computer Associates, IBM, McAfee, NewTek, Oracle, PTC, Symantec, Trend Micro, and Veritas Software have or will soon announce 64-bit editions of their software. More vendors are expected by the end of the year.

Photoshop turned twenty years old this year. That may seem like nothin' but a number, but when you look at the Mac platforms it's migrated to and from, and the fact that it's had 12 versions, Photoshop's twenty years have seen a lot of changes for one application. From System 6 on the Motorola 68000, it was then ported to PowerPC, then to OS X, then to OS X Intel, and now to Cocoa and 64-bit. All this while adding the features that make it the meaty image editor it is today. One look at the laundry list of major additions in CS5 makes it clear that Adobe isn't anywhere near done with the product. The new feature list is unrelenting:
